Top Indiana Republicans expect to see action toward tightening the state’s abortion law during the Legislature’s special session that is set to start next month. Leaders of the Republican-dominated Legislature said Friday they were glad the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling returned decisions on regulation abortion to the states. Republican House Speaker Todd Huston said he expected lawmakers would “take action to further protect life when we return to the Statehouse.” GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb earlier this week called the Legislature into a special session starting July 6 to take up a tax refund proposal, but state law allows legislators to take up any subject.

Helio Castroneves was promised a shot at a NASCAR start if he won a race this summer in the Superstar Racing Experience. Well, Castroneves won the opening event in the summer all-star series and now the SRX CEO is working to land Castroneves a seat in the Daytona 500. The four-time Indianapolis 500 winner will try to make it two SRX wins in a row this Saturday night when the series races at South Boston Speedway in Virginia.

The Chicago Blackhawks are nearing a deal with Luke Richardson to become their next coach, turning to the former NHL defenseman to help lead their already painful rebuilding process. Richardson and the Blackhawks are working on a contract, according to a person familiar with the talks, and the move could be finalized as soon as next week. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. Richardson, a native of Ottawa, Ontario, was an assistant on Montreal’s coaching staff for the previous four seasons.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade won’t immediately affect Kansas law. But it could soon have a major impact after Kansans vote in August on a high-stakes ballot question.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent employees home on Friday to “celebrate” the overturning of Roe. v Wade, according to an email sent throughout the agency.

British officials said the monkeypox outbreak U.K. is continuing to grow across the country mainly among men who are gay or bisexual or other men who have sex with men. They urged those with new or multiple sex partners to be vigilant for the symptoms of monkeypox. Britain’s Health Security Agency said Friday that their data show monkeypox is spreading in “defined sexual networks of gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.” Officials said there were no signs suggesting sustained spread beyond those populations.

Defending champion Harris English shot a second-round 65 Friday to move into a tie for first place at 9-under after the morning rounds at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. Patrick Cantlay, playing in the same group as English, led by two strokes heading into their final hole of the morning. But he found bunkers on his first two shots at No. 9 and finished with a bogey, while English sank a birdie putt from just under 20 feet. Cantlay, who shot a 60 at TPC River Highlands as an amateur in 2011,  had a 67 Friday.

Police say they have arrested a suspect in this week’s fatal shooting of a man on a San Francisco subway commuter train. A San Francisco Police Department spokesperson says the suspect was arrested Thursday in a city about 40 miles east of San Francisco. A motive has not been determined for Wednesday's shooting, which killed one man and wounded another. The suspect was booked into San Francisco jail minutes after midnight Friday. He faces charges of homicide, having a concealed firearm and allegations of using a firearm.

Authorities in Tunisia say a man with a knife attacked police officers stationed near a synagogue in North African nation's capital. They say one office was injured in the shoulder and another on the hand. An Interior Ministry spokesperson says the attacker fled after the overnight stabbing but was located nearby soon afterward along with the knife. She described the incident on Friday as a terrorist attack and said investigators were trying to determine whether the suspect had accomplices. The motive is unclear. The ministry spokesperson mentioned unspecified threats targeting President Kais Saied that she says were aimed at “undermining public security and sowing chaos in Tunisia.” She didn't provide details, citing ongoing investigations.

Religious Americans are deeply divided in their views on abortion. That is clearly reflected in reactions from faith leaders to the Supreme Court’s momentous ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion. The decision is being hailed by leading Catholic bishops, even though a majority of U.S. Catholics support abortion rights. It's also welcomed by many evangelical Christian leaders. Some mainline Protestant leaders are decrying the ruling, however. Several Jewish organizations say the decision infringes on Jewish traditions that accept the need for abortions.

In "The Man From Toronto," Kevin Hart plays Teddy, a man so well-known for his screw-ups that among those in his orbit, including his wife, his name has become a verb that means to screw up. When someone drops the ball, makes a mistake or otherwise blunders something, they've Teddied it.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, but women currently can still have abortions in South Carolina, though the state prohibits them after 20 weeks and imposes other restrictions.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision allowing states to ban abortion is stirring alarm among LGBTQ advocates. They fear that the ruling could someday allow a rollback of legal protections for gay relationships and access to contraception. In the majority opinion issued Friday that overturns the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, Justice Samuel Alito said the decision applied only to abortion. But critics of the court’s conservative majority discounted that statement. And in a separate concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas said the court should review other precedents, including its 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage and a 2003 decision striking down laws criminalizing gay sex.

Six Oklahomans have filed two federal lawsuits that challenge a state law intended to crack down on protestors and that allege their civil rights were violated when they were arrested in Oklahoma City in 2020. The six say the anti-protest law is unconstitutionally broad and vague. The law passed in 2021 increases the penalties for blocking roadways and grants immunity to motorists who kill or injure rioters. The second lawsuit alleges that the constitutional rights of five of the six plaintiffs were violated when they were charged with inciting a riot following a confrontation with police. The charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor. The sixth plaintiff alleges that he was wrongly implicated in the confrontation.

Alex Bowman felt he underperformed last year when NASCAR brought the Cup Series back to the Nashville area for the first time in 37 years. He finished 14th but his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson won the race. The hard part for Bowman was that he had just inked a new two-year contract extension through 2023 to drive the No. 48 for Hendrick with sponsor Ally, and Ally is heavily tied to NASCAR's return to Nashville Superspeedway. He's now seeking a stronger showing Sunday as Ally is again the primary sponsor of the race and has Bowman scheduled for events all across the city.

Slugger Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees agreed to a $19 million, one-year contrtact, avoiding an arbitration hearing. Judge can make an additional $250,000 for MVP and $250,000 for World Series MVP. He is in the middle of perhaps his best season, batting .304 with 27 homers and 53 RBIs in 68 games for the major league-leading Yankees. He hit a game-winning RBI single during New York’s 7-6 victory over Houston on Thursday night.

This week’s new entertainment releases include a new album from Imagine Dragons, the reuniting of “Home Improvement” sitcom buddies Tim Allen and Richard Karn for “More Power” and the return of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as unlikely crime-solving New York City neighbors in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” The biggest new movie streaming this week is “The Princess,” coming to Hulu on July 1, starring Joey King as a royal who refuses to marry her intended. And Ken Burns adds his heft to “Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness,” which gives a voice to young people with mental health conditions and those in their lives.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has advanced to the final of the Mallorca Championships after beating Benjamin Bonzi in straight sets. The second-seeded Tsitsipas saved all three break points he faced to beat Bonzi of France 6-4, 6-4. Tsitsipas will face Roberto Bautista Agut after the Spaniard beat Antoine Bellier 7-6 (5), 6-2. On Thursday Bautista Agut upset top-ranked Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. The grass-court tournament is a warmup for Wimbledon next week.

Americans are reacting with anger, joy, fear and confusion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The chasm over the issue is on full display: Abortion rights supporters are condemning the decision as cruel and regressive and calling it a dark day in history. Abortion foes are rejoicing and saying it will save countless lives. In its ruling, the high court eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion that has stood for a half-century, instead leaving the issue up to the states, roughly half of which are likely to ban the procedure.

An estimated 2,000 migrants have walked out of the southern Mexico city of Tapachula in a caravan. They say they're not interested in visas and permits the government has issued in efforts to dissolve other caravans. Instead they call for buses to the U.S. border. The latest group comes just two weeks after an even larger one left Tapachula. Most of those migrants were issued temporary documents allowing them to continue north through Mexico. But migrants walking Friday say that authorities in other parts of Mexico haven't respected those documents and many migrants were returned to the south.

A Wisconsin teenager accused of killing a 10-year-old girl will find out in September whether he will stand trial. Chippewa County Circuit Judge Benjamin Lane on Friday scheduled a Sept. 1 preliminary hearing for the 14-year-old boy. That's the step in the criminal justice process where a judge determines if enough evidence exists to bind a defendant over for trial. The boy was charged April 27 with homicide and sexual assault in connection with the death of Iliana Peters, who was known as Lily. She was reported missing on April 24 in Chippewa Falls. Searchers found her body in the woods the next morning. According to court documents, the boy told investigators he strangled Lily and sexually assaulted her body.

FORT WORTH, Texas — With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Texas is set to further limit access to abortions in a state that already has one of the most restrictive abortion laws.

BALTIMORE — The Supreme Court upended a half-century of precedent Friday when it overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion a constitutional right, shifting the onus to states such as Maryland to provide services.

Novak Djokovic will be trying to win a fourth consecutive Wimbledon title and seventh overall when play begins on the grass courts of the All England Club. He also will be aiming for his 21st Grand Slam trophy. He is seeded No. 1 because the top two men in the rankings are not in the field: No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is barred along with all other players from Russia and Belarus, and No. 2 Alexander Zverev is injured. Iga Swiatek is seeded No. 1 in the women's field and enters on a 35-match winning streak. Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams makes her return to singles player after a year away. Play begins Monday.

The former Minneapolis police officer who fatally shot a woman who called 911 to report a possible sexual assault behind her home in 2017 is scheduled to be released from prison next week. Mohamed Noor received a new sentence in October of nearly five years in prison after the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned a third-degree murder conviction against him for killing Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a dual U.S.-Australian citizen. The decision vacated a prison term of 12 ½ years that Noor had been serving. Noor began serving his time at a Minnesota prison, but was transferred in 2019 to a facility in North Dakota for his own safety. State officials have yet to say where Noor will be released on Monday.

Demand for record albums continues to soar in the United States, and the manufacturing base is having to reinvent itself to meet demand. The Recording Industry Association of America says record album sales grew a whopping 61% last year — and reached $1 billion for the first time since the 1980s. Dozens of record-pressing factories have been built to try to meet demand in North America — and it’s still not enough. Industry officials said they don't know the ceiling for albums because of supply constraints. There are now about 40 plants in the U.S. — most of them smaller operations — and backlogs of six to eight months remain.

A Black DoorDash driver no longer faces charges in a traffic stop for speeding in which a police officer shot him with a stun gun. The exchange involving Delane Gordon and Collegedale Officer Evan Driskill was largely made public by a video Gordon recorded on his cellphone, as he declined to leave his car and requested a police supervisor. The Collegedale Police Department last month cleared the white officer of wrongdoing in the encounter and sharply criticized prosecutors for their handling of the case. Gordon's attorney, Ryan Wheeler, said last month that the only investigation that matters was the one by the district attorney's office that cleared Gordon.

The U.N.’s top human rights body is to hold an urgent debate next week to discuss the erosion of rights of women and girls in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover nearly a year ago. Human Rights Council spokesman Rolando Gomez said the Geneva-based rights body was expected to hold the debate next Friday as part of its ongoing summer session. The European Union and France requested the urgent debate and cited restrictions that women and girls have faced such as lack of access to jobs, education and public life generally under the Taliban since their return to power last August.

Millions of people who've been immersed in the anti-abortion movement for the past half-century are rejoicing after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Among them is 70-year-old Tanya Britton of Tupelo, Mississippi, who came to see her own abortion as a teenager as wrong and spent decades hoisting signs outside of clinics, cajoling lawmakers at the statehouse and spreading her anti-abortion gospel to anyone who’d listen. She sees the court's action as the answer to decades of prayers. Around the country, many others mourned the decision, seeing it as one that robs a basic human right, inordinately affects poor people, and could lead to needless deaths of desperate women.
