The public inquiry into the Nova Scotia mass shooting has released new details on what it calls the gunman’s financial “misdealings.”

A new document shows he cleared out his bank accounts before his 13-hour rampage in April 2020 over concerns the pandemic would collapse the global banking system.

Police found $705,000 buried in a metal ammunition box after searching the charred remains of his Portapique property.

“Although the perpetrator set the cottage on fire, and the area was consumed by fire, the metal ammunition container was hidden below ground, which might explain why it was not destroyed,” the document states.”There were eight packages of cash wrapped in tinfoil and one bundle that was not wrapped. The packages ‘looked like bricks,’ … Inside each of the ‘bricks’ were several bundles of Canadian currency.”

His common-law spouse told investigators his reported annual income of $40,000 wasn’t what his denture business actually made.

For example, the clinic received $434,000 from the province for services provided to patients on income assistance, but only half was reported.

The Mass Casualty Commission notes he used “illegitimate” methods to amass cash and enjoy a lifestyle beyond his means.

But no evidence was found to suggest he was involved in organized crime or that he worked as an informant for the police despite the rumours that swirled after his rampage.

The gunman took the lives of 22 people while disguised as an RCMP officer driving a mock cruiser on April 18th and 19th, 2020.
