SCOUTING NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (6-5-6, 24 PTS., 7TH EASTERN CONFERENCE) Bruce Arena’s side is red-hot at the moment, finding their form after juggling U.S. Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, and MLS regular season play in the first half of the season. The Revs are unbeaten in nine straight matches, dating back to their last loss in late April to D.C. United.

2021 Landon Donovan MLS MVP Carles Gil leads the league in key passes (55) and is tied for second in the league with eight assists, trailing only Luciano Acosta’s nine. The Revs and FC Cincinnati are both top five in the league in goals scored through the halfway point in the season.

Forward Adam Buksa has departed the club for RC Lens in the French Ligue 1, and goalkeeper Matt Turner has completed his move to Arsenal FC in the English Premier League since the last time these two teams squared off.

STORYLINES OF THE GAME PLENTY OF CONNECTIONS – There is no shortage of connections between the Revolution and FC Cincinnati, particularly on the technical side.

Head Coach Pat Noonan was selected in the first round (9th overall) of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the Revs. Noonan scored 37 goals in 119 regular season apps with New England. Then to begin his coaching career in 2013, he started with LA Galaxy under then-Head Coach Bruce Arena. He followed Arena to the U.S. Men’s National Team in 2017 when Arena was appointed manager of the USMNT. 

FC Cincinnati Assistant Coach Kenny Arena will face off against his father Bruce on opposing sidelines for the third time in MLS competition, the first coming when Kenny was an assistant with LAFC on August 3, 2019, a 2-0 LAFC win over the Revs.

- FCC General Manager Chris Albright made 26 appearances with the Revs in 2008.

- Luciano Acosta scored his first career goal against the Revs, on April 23, 2016 as a substitute for D.C. United at RFK Stadium in the 86th minute.

- Massachusetts native Geoff Cameron made his MLS debut against NE on March 29, 2008.

WEEK OF HONORS – After Wednesday’s wild 4-4 draw with New York City FC, the honors have come rolling in for Orange and Blue players. Brenner became the first player in club history to be voted MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire following his hat trick, the first three-goal performance in club history.

Brenner, along with Luciano Acosta, were additionally named to the MLS Team of the Week.

SPEAKING OF LUCHO – After Luciano Acosta’s third two-assist game since joining FC Cincinnati last season, he now leads all of Major League Soccer in assists (9).

20 FOR RAY – FC Cincinnati defender Ray Gaddis, should he appear on Sunday, will make his 20th career appearance against the New England Revolution. It would break a tie for most appearances he has made against any other side (MTL - 19). He enters Sunday having played 1,649 minutes against the Revs, most against any opponent.

THE THIRD MEETING – FC Cincinnati face the Revolution for the third time in 2022 across all competitions. The two sides in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on May 11, where the Revs won at home, 5-1. 10 days later New England won again, 3-2, thanks to the game-winner coming in the match’s final moments from Tommy McNamara.

It will also be the third MLS regular season contest between the two sides at Gillette Stadium. Last season, the eventual Supporters’ Shield winners took a decisive 4-1 win. But in 2019, the Orange and Blue won the club’s first road game on March 24, a 2-0 clean sheet victory.

HEAD COACH PAT NOONAN'S TAKE On if the lopsided series history with New England plays a factor “I don't think so. It's been a common theme, I feel like that question or concern has come up previously against a lot of our opponents. So, for me, we don't talk about that just because a lot of these challenges are our first together. But I think these guys have been ready to tackle things head on and done a pretty solid job of just focusing on our next opponent and how we can have success, and I think that's what's enabled us to find more success than maybe in the past. But certainly this particular year where they've gotten the better of us twice, and those are things that you don't lose sight of in the upcoming matchup. We'd like to make this third matchup against them one that ends more successfully for us.”

On the team's positioning “To be honest, I think we're right where we should be. The expectations weren't 'we're going to be in the middle of the table, the top of the table, bottom and table.' It was, we're going to see progress in our group. And I think where we are in the table, where our performances have been have shown progress. And I think we deserve to be where we're at. But we didn't talk a whole lot about in this first half of the season, 'this is our goal.' So now we're here, we've talked about the next 10 games as an important stretch to position us to have meaningful games to end the year. I like where we're at. And I think based on conversations early on, this is where we would have expected to see in terms of progress. Now the results, they come and go. You can have good results, or good performances and not the results to go with it. I think where we're at is pretty fair."
